Hong Kong 4D Frame Maths & Science Creativity Competition

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) introduced the STEAM Educational Programme "4D Frame" from South Korea to Hong Kong in 2012. 4D Frame is an innovative educational tool developed for creative mathematics and science education. To stimulate students' creativity and enhance their spatial thinking with eye-hand coordination ability, the Federation is organizing the first regional competition "Hong Kong 4D Frame Maths & Science Creativity Competition" to all local primary and secondary schools from the 2017 school year.

2019 Hong Kong 4D Frame Maths & Science Creativity Competition will be held on 13 July (Saturday).

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups “Hong Kong 4D Frame Maths & Science Creativity Competition” is open for application!
This year, the Federation is organising the new “Code for Computational Thinking Training and Smart 4D Frame division” with the sponsorship by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. 60 teams of primary 4 to primary 5 students will attend a 5-session training programme of micro:bit coding and design skills. Upon the completion of training, they will show their creativity and problem-solving ability in the Competition.

Competition Details

Competition Components
This is a team-based Competition opened for all local primary and secondary schools. Each school may send up to 10 teams to the Competition. Each team may have 2 team members and 1 team instructor. All enrollments will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Teams may use either Cantonese or English to compete in the Competition.

Teams participate in the Competition according to their grades and age groups:
Junior Primary Division: age under 9 (Primary 1 to 2)
Senior Primary Division: age under 12 (Primary 3 to 5)
Smart 4D Frame Division [Details] : age under 12 (Primary 4 to 5)
Junior Secondary Division: age under 16 (Secondary 1 to 3)

 Registration fee for each team is HK$400 (except Smart 4D Frame Division). Enrolled teams can join the free Workshop held by the Organiser (first-come-first-served basis).

The three main components in the Competition are:
 
  1. Creation Record

Teams are required to prepare the Creation Record of their 4D Frame Design during the Competition period, and submit at the end of the Competition time. The Creation Record serves to detail the journey of how the 4D Frame model works.

 
  1. 4D Frame Model Design

Teams will design a 4D Frame model by using the materials provided in the Competition with reference to the topics and guideline of the year. Teams will have 3 hours to complete the 4D Frame model. No score will be given for any incomplete works after the Competition.

 
  1. Mission Achievement (For Senior Primary Division or above)

Mission Achievement aims to test participants’ actual ability to 4D Frame spatial structure and problem-solving during the creative design process. Mission tasks will be revealed to teams at the time the topics and guidelines announced. For different divisions, specific requirement will be given in the guidelines. Teams have to test the 4D Frame model and try to complete the mission tasks within the competition period.



As time is limited for doing the Creation Record, building the 4D Frame model and finishing the mission tasks, teams will then need to make a strategic decision for better time management and work in cooperation to get the highest scores.

Smart 4D Frame Competition Components
Code for computational thinking training

This training aims to enhance students’ computational thinking, creativity and problem-solving ability. Students will use micro:bit to develop coding and programme skills. They will also learn product design knowledge with 4D Frame Maths and Science learning tools.

Target: age under 12 (Primary 4 to 5)
No. of Lesson: 5 lessons (must reach the minimum attendance rate of 80%)
Time: 2 hours each lesson
Period: April - May 2019
Learning kit: micro:bit, 4D Frame educational tool and particular electronic components to be provided
Quota: 60 teams (2 members each); maximum 4 teams per school (first-come-first-served)
Language: Cantonese
Remarks: Free of charge; participants must also participate in the Competition

Smart 4D Frame Competition Components

Upon the completion of the above mentioned training, teams will participate in the “Smart 4D Frame” division of the 2019 Hong Kong 4D Frame Maths & Science Creativity Competition. Same as other divisions of the Competition, each team is formed by 2 team members and 1 team instructor. Teams may use either Cantonese or English to compete in the Competition.

The three main components in the Competition are:
  1. Creation Record

Teams are required to prepare the Creation Record of their 4D Frame Design during the Competition period, and submit at the end of the Competition time. The Creation Record serves to detail the journey of how the 4D Frame model works.

  1. Smart 4D Frame Model Design

Teams will design and build a Smart 4D Frame device with their pre-coded micro:bit, designated electronic components and 4D Frame materials during the Competition, according to the topic and guideline of this year. Teams will have 3 hours to complete the 4D Frame model. No score will be given for any incomplete works after the Competition.

  1. Mission Achievement

Overseas Exchange
The winning teams from Hong Kong joined the International 4D Frame Competition (IMSCC) which was held in Gwacheon National Science Museum, South Korea on 21 October 2018, and awarded the excellent achievement. They had a great time for cultural exchange with other teams from different countries and regions around the world too.
